My first breastfeeding photography session!
With what I do I am very privileged to meet so many mums from different backgrounds and families. This means I get to share in some very intimate moments with their families, especially with my newborn sessions.
However, recently Katrina approached my through my facebook page and asked me if I would be interested in photographing her with her gorgeous little 7 month old baby Sophie. But this wasn’t a normal session, Katrina asked me if I would capture her breastfeeding her daughter, as she wanted something to remember that most special time between mummy and baby before she stopped feeding.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big believer in whether your baby is fed by bottle or breast, it really doesn’t matter as long as they are feeding and growing. But I myself breastfed my daughter until she was 7 months, and I have to say, a big part of me would have carried on for a lot longer (the other part was glad to get her boobs back without teeth marks in) 🙂 I know it’s a struggle for many mums, but I was one of the lucky ones, who actually really enjoyed it.
I have lots of pictures of me feeding, usually selfies that I took during the day – on one of those long evening feeding stints, or when I was trying to take a pic of her face when she looked so cute, and managed to get a stray nipple or boob shot at the same time, and I kinda wish I had some lovely ones of me feeding her, that weren’t taken on my iphone!
So I jumped at the chance, and Katrina and I made arrangements to meet a couple of weeks later (along with her hubby – who came along to help out with Sophie). We met at the beautiful Harcourt Arboretum, it’s a lovely quiet place, perfect for photo sessions, with lots of trees and greenery and you’re very rarely bothered by another soul. So it was easy for us to find a couple of quiet spots where Katrina could sit down, relax and feed Sophie without an audience and where Sophie wasn’t too distracted by anything else.
It was such a lovely thing to do, and reminded me how quickly these little munchkins grow in to little people, just to stop and capture those precious times and remember how small they are is something we don’t do enough of! Thank you Katrina for allowing me to share in your memories!
Here are a few of the lovely images we got from the day.
