Recently, I welcomed the sweetest little birthday girl into the studio along with her lovely family, two big brothers and a proud big sister. From the moment they arrived, the energy was warm, relaxed and full of excitement… exactly how I love my cake smash sessions to feel.
Starting with Family Photos
Before we even brought the cake out, we began with some beautiful family portraits. This is something I always recommend during a first birthday cake smash photoshoot. Babies can sometimes be a little unsure when they first arrive somewhere new, so starting with cuddles and smiles with the people they love most helps them feel settled and happy.
Big sister was amazing at making her little sibling giggle, and her brothers were just as brilliant, full of personality, and so gentle with their baby sister. These early images are always such a special part of the session because they capture your family exactly as you are in this season of life. A cake smash isn’t just about the cake; it’s about celebrating your baby’s first birthday and the people who’ve been there every step of the way.
The Strawberry Cake Smash Setup
Then it was time for the star of the show… the cake smash! 🍓
This session had the cutest strawberry theme, perfect for a little girl. Think soft pinks, fresh reds and sweet, fruity details that felt bright, fun and totally age-appropriate. The setup was designed to be playful but not overwhelming, so the focus stayed right where it should be — on that adorable little face.
And oh my goodness… she LOVED it.
Some babies take a little convincing when it comes to digging into their cake, but not this little one! From the very first handful of frosting, she was all smiles. She squished, poked, tasted and giggled her way through the session, giving us the most joyful expressions. These are the moments parents tell me they never want to forget: messy hands, icing on cheeks and that pure, uninhibited one-year-old happiness.

Splash Time: The Bath Session
After all that cake, it was time for one of my favourite parts of a cake smash — the bath!
The warm little tub is not only practical (goodbye sticky fingers!) but also such a brilliant photo opportunity. This birthday girl absolutely adored the water. She splashed, kicked and laughed her way through the bath session, giving us a whole new set of expressions — wide-eyed excitement, cheeky grins and those irresistible wet curls. The hardest part was getting her to sit down.
Bath splash photos are often parents’ surprise favourites because they capture such a different side of your baby’s personality. It’s playful, sensory and full of movement, the perfect way to end a first birthday session.
